ANTIQUARY ARAGO’S DIARY

Antiquary Arago’s Diary is a crime novel by the Turkish author Mehmet Murat ildan, published (in Turkish) in Istanbul by the “Truva Publishing House” (Truva Yayinlari) in August 2005.

The novel takes place in the John Constable Country in the 19th century England. A famous and wealthy aristocratic novelist Gregory Morgan, living in a small village in Dedham-Essex, decides to write a crime novel.

His wife Elizabeth persuades him that no fiction can be superior to reality. She offers her husband to meet a real murderer so that he can deeply examine and understand the true nature of murderers…

A different version of the novel exists as a theatre play, Emmanuel Arago’s Diary which was translated into English by Yurdanur Salman a well-known linguist in Istanbul.

ROSES UNDERNEATH PARIS

Roses underneath Paris is a crime novel by the Turkish author Mehmet Murat ildan, published (in Turkish) in Istanbul by the Truva Publishing House (Truva Yayinlari) in January 2006.

the Novel takes place in the 1930’s Paris. In a narrow and a dirty street, a beggar has been begging money from a rich woman. After they talk for a while, the beggar discovers a secret of the woman…

Events will take the beggar to the Royal Street Sewer (Egout de la Rue Royale) in Paris.

In Chapter II, Roses underneath Paris has a one act theatre play, Cunning Knight. This play has psychological significance for the characters in the novel.

THE FIRST SORROWS OF YOUNG WERTHER

The First Sorrows of Young Werther is an epistolary novel by the Turkish author Mehmet Murat ildan, published (in Turkish) in Istanbul by the Truva Publishing House (Truva Yayinlari) in April 2007.

The novel carries the traces of German literary movement “Sturm und Drang.” (German for “Storm and Stress”) Starting from a paragraph in Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther, writer Mehmet Murat ildan has added a premier episode to Goethe’s novel.

The novel takes place in the 18th century England. In 1769, young artist of a highly sensitive and passionate temperament, Werther, goes to Shakespeare’s town Stratford upon Avon; while watching a play, he falls in love with a pretty girl who is an actress. Events will take him to the Dunnotar Castle on the north-east coast of Scotland.

MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND GANDHI

This play gives the life story of Mahatma Gandhi and his non-violent struggle against the British rule in India; it also gives the story of the establishment of modern India. The play begins when Gandhi is twelve years old and ends with his death.

GALILEO GALILEI (GALILAEUS GALILAEI)

This is a Comedy about the clash between geocentric and heliocentric world views in Renaissance Italy. Since the German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s Life of Galileo, it is another theatrical work about Galilei’s life.

EYES OF MAGIC

The play passes in the 17th century Italy. A count, Signor Monteverdi, lost a big amount when gambling and so he got into a huge debt. If he can’t pay it back, everything he has will be taken away from him. To solve this problem, count visits a magician, Metastasio, who lives in an island surrounded by marsh land.

This play got “The Best Play Award” in a National Playwriting Contest in Istanbul. It is partly published in the “Absinthe New European Writing Journal” in the USA.

It is a text written in the tradition of Italian Commedia dell’Arte which was a popular form of improvisational theatre which began in the 16th century.

MASTER WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

The play passes in the early XVIIth century England, the times of Elizabeth I. A Sunday morning in London, near Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Shakespeare comes accross Francis, a young man, a great admirer of Shakespeare, from Stratford upon Avon.

The play contains a great many details about the English Renaissance theatre, and the problems faced by the playwrights in that period. The language and logic of Shakespeare are used throughout the play.

This play is about the life of Siddartha Gautama Buddha and the philosophy of Buddhisim.

In 563 BC, Buddha’s father King Suddhodana and his mother Queen Maya go to a temple to see the wise man Asita. They try to learn the meanings of supernatural things surrounding their newly born baby Siddhartha.

This play takes place in the early 17th century England. In the year 1625, a pretty woman, a wife of an alchemist, confesses to a priest that she is in love with him. But after the priest watches Shakespeare’s unknown and newly discovered play, “A Midsummer Night’s Nightmare,” events take a different path. Alchemist’s Wife has a play within play. The inner play has psychological significance for the characters in the outer play.

IT ALL BEGAN WITH MARIANNE

The play passes in Paris in the year 2000. A bachelor woman playwright, Marianne, has been sitting on a bench in a park near the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral. Antoine comes and sits next to her; then the whole comedy of errors starts.

AN ADMIRER OF MACHIAVELLI

This play takes place in a small village in Turkey. It is about a deputy candidate running an election campaign and his efforts to deceive and manipulate good-hearted villagers for getting their votes. This comedy is a critique of Machiavellianism.

A play about Ephesos, an antique city on the Aegean coast of Turkey which was once the capital city of the Roman province of Asia; throughout the play, the philosophy of Heraklitus that everything changes and everything flows was emphasized. The city’s most important events between 1000 BC and 70 AD is also given.

INVITED GUESTS

A Drama about Turkish-Greek friendship. It takes place in the south Aegean Sea coast of Turkey and in the Greek Samos Island in the year 2001. Four university students from Izmir have been camping on the coast across the island. While they are fishing, they find a mysterious bottle with a message inside.

JOURNEY TO GOD

A Drama about universe, about God, about a man who fights for a new religion, a religion of science. It questions our understanding of universe. The play’s philosophy depends on the following ideas : We are living in a chaotic universe. There is no order in the universe. Order is nothing but an illusion. God is real but religion is an imagination. God is neither controlling the world nor supervising the universe. There is no fate, there is no spirit. Science is the first and the last prophet of the human beings. Since Man does not have any soul, the only way we can reach to God is through science. But science has two faces: A dark face and a bright face. Dark face is the invention and the production of weapons. World needs a new Gandhi, a global Gandhi who will organize a strong movement by using Satyagraha, a resistance through mass civil disobedience, to eliminate the dark face of the science. All resources released from the dark face will be transferred to the bright one.

MASTER MOLIERE IS MARRYING

This comedy takes place in the 17th century Paris. Moliere is at the age of 39 and he decides to marry. He is looking for a wife who should be young and a good cook.

VOLCANO

It takes place in a farm in the Aegean Sea coast of Turkey. A famous writer, Mr Sabahattin, who is living alone in the farm, invites his neighbours to his house. After a while, he realizes that, his most important novel stub he has been working on has disappeared.

PANDORA’S BOX

The play takes place in the 1940’s Istanbul. Detective Fazıl Okyar goes to visit an old friend who is a seller of secondhand books in the historical street of Asma Kandil. The detective in fact investigates a suicide case committed in that street.
